Abstract The success of high-power fiber lasers is fueled by maturation active and passive fibers, combined with the availability fiber-based components. In this contribution, we first overview enormous potential rare-earth doped fibers in spectral coverage recent developments key components employed laser systems. Subsequently, emerging functional years, which exhibit tremendous advantages balancing or mitigating parasitic nonlinearities hindering transmission, are outlined from perspectives geometric material engineering. Finally, novel applications conventional for nonlinear suppression spatial mode selection, correspondingly, progress function power handling introduced, suggest more flexible controllability on operations.
